Hoover Dam - Looking Upstream Panoramic Framed Print Hoover Dam - Looking Upstream Panoramic Framed Print. This aerial panorama of Hoover Dam, taken by James Blakeway, captures a beautiful sunny day over the dam, with Lake Mead in the background to the left. Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression, and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving 21,000 workers, 45,000,000 pounds of reinforcing steel and 4,360,000 cubic yards of concrete. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California.
